Fun Furniture:
“ We've got a media centre PC and a games console that both plug into the television in the sitting room. We want a coffee table with some practical storage for remotes, keyboard, DVDs, console games etc... but something funky, not just a square box with drawers, something eye-catching. ”
Brief: Media coffee table
Preliminary sketches
This was a fairly open brief, so we came up with a few themes with different features for the client to choose from. The designs offered storage solutions that met the criteria, but with different styling.Design
The client settled on a blend of features from the designs we presented. The detailed drawings were finalised and sent back for final approval, along with recommendations for finish and fixings.Media coffee table
Commissioned for: £450
The completed piece finished in oiled pine veneer plywood with brushed steel handles. Two large deep drawers provide ample storage for DVDs and console games (in wallet type organisers) and console controllers. The pivoting drawer provides easy access to the remotes and makes the keyboard for the media PC useable in-situ for quick typing, rather than having to lift it out.Overall the design was unconventional for a coffee table, no straight lines anywhere on the piece (except for the drawer linings).
Plenty of handy storage for remotes and the media centre wireless keyboard and mouse. Easy to access and use for short periods without needing to lift them out.
Deep drawers that house DVDs, console games and controllers, and an additional "secret" storage area, to make maximum use of the space (not shown).
